Ray Marriott was born in Milton on 13th April 1890 – the first son of Francis Sharpe Marriott and Gertrude Sarah Griffith. He was the grandson of Thomas Marriott who had been instrumental in forming the Baptist movement within the village. His younger brother Sidney died in infancy just 4 days after his birth on 13th July 1891, making Ray the only child.
Ray’s parents were both born in Milton, and they were married in the Parish Church on 14th August 1888. At some stage the family moved to Leicester, and so Ray joined the Leicestershire Regiment when the time came for him to “do his bit”.
We include here a copy of the letter Ray prepared for his parents – to be delivered in the event of his death. The tone of the letter – its considerateness and the absence of any bitterness – is touching, and speaks volumes about a generation who were prepared to make the “ultimate sacrifice” for their country. He was killed on 24th July 1915, aged 25.
